How we build portfolios
Four principles, consistently applied
Keep costs low
Unnecessary and hidden fees compound against you. We aim to minimize them through fund expenses, transaction costs, and product layers.
Diversify broadly
An allocation across multiple asset classes matched to your goals, time horizon, and risk tolerance
Manage for taxes
Asset location, lot selection, and withdrawal sequencing are part of the investment decision, not a separate exercise.
Stay disciplined
Most long-term performance comes from avoiding common pitfalls and managing emotional biases that can derail your plan.
What we typically hold
ETFs tracking major stock indices
Diversified bond funds
Individual U.S. Treasury securities
What we don’t do
We don’t pick individual stocks
We don’t chase yield
We don’t sell commissioned products
Consistently beating the market over long periods is rare, even among full-time professionals. The good news is that you don’t need to beat the market. We think a disciplined plan gives you a better chance of reaching your objectives than trying to outsmart the stock market.
How decisions get made
You set the plan with us
You’re involved in building the initial investment policy and any material changes to it
We handle the execution
Discretionary authority means trades happen without chasing you for a signature
You see everything
Real-time access to accounts, holdings, performance reports, and all activity
What is Altruist?
Altruist is the tech-forward platform we use to open and manage your accounts, execute trades, and keep your finances running smoothly. For you, it’s a single place to see everything and take action.
Where do you hold my money?
We manage your accounts, but we do not hold them. Altruist Financial LLC, an independent broker-dealer and a member of FINRA and SIPC, custodies your assets. Altruist is not affiliated with Oakleigh Wealth Services.
That separation is the point. Accounts are opened in your name, and your securities are held separately from our firm’s and Altruist's own corporate assets. Our authority is limited: we can place trades and deduct our fee, but we cannot move your money anywhere except to you.
Why we chose Altruist
We chose Altruist for low platform costs, electronic account handling that spares clients the paperwork, and reporting that is straightforward to read. We review our custody arrangement periodically and would change it if something better suited our clients.
Is my money protected at Altruist?
Altruist is a member of SIPC, which protects securities accounts up to $500,000 (including $250,000 for cash claims). Altruist also carries excess SIPC coverage through Lloyd’s of London. Altruist is regulated by the SEC, FINRA, OCC, and 53 states and territories. Altruist always holds client assets separately from its own funds.
Altruist provides the same regulatory protections and asset safeguards as the industry’s largest custodians. The key difference is that Altruist was built from scratch with a tech-forward mindset—which means a cleaner digital experience for you and a more efficient platform for your advisor.
What you will actually see
You get your own login to the Altruist portal and mobile app. You can review holdings, balances, cost basis, and transaction history there, link a bank account, move money, and update account information, all electronically. Altruist provides your statements and tax forms. For anything about your plan, your portfolio, or a decision you are weighing, you come to us.
